Island of the Blue Dolphins

Title is up there, obviously. The author is Scott O'Dell and it's a book very similar to Hatchet. There are 184 pages and it's a moderately easy read. There wasn't much dialogue used, but this book is deep and detailed, which is awesome. There were a few twists and an honest to goodness ending that doesn't leave you hanging. I seriously hate those sorts of books. The storyline is about an Indian tribe that leaves behind a girl named Karana, who ends up living there alone for years. It was super interesting and a relatively fast read. Check it out.

P.S. It's a Newberry Award Winner book. That has to mean something, right?

The cover of this book was what attracted me. It was bright red, with a big button on it, and I thought it stood out. The title, Jumping The Scratch, had no meaning to me because I didn't know what it meant. When I saw who the author was, I knew the book was worth reading. Sarah Weeks was also the author of the sensational So B. It. I've never read So B. It, but from reading the plot, I learned that this author sure writes the most interesting, realistic story lines. Anyways, about "Jumping The Scratch" - the main character is named Jamie Reardon. Everyone has heard of bad things coming in threes, but after Jamie's cat dies, his father leaves, and his aunt encounters memory loss from a cherry-factory accident, another fatal incident causes Jamie to suffer. He spend days figuring how to forget the incident that is haunting him. Jamie collects empty cherry cans to stack around him at night so that when he comes, Jamie can wake up and escape. No one knows of this incident but himself, and he carries it with him everywhere. Meanwhile, Jamie and his mother are trying to find the "magic trigger", the object that will save his aunt's memory forever. The ending is when I found out what the secretive incident was, and along with that, what the magic trigger was- although, surprisingly, it was right in front of my face the whole time. The power of memory is strongly enhanced in this memorable novel. :)

Posts Have Been Checked

Anything posted prior to this post has been logged on a grading sheet. You may not go back and add to old posts, but please do continue to make new posts. The posts are getting better. Please remember to not just say a book is awesome but to comment on something about it or to share why you liked it. Also, it must include the author's name, the number of pages and your name at the end of the post to get full credit. As far as the responses to other posts go, they need to have more thorough responses. You can't just say you like or don't like something or ask a simple yes/no question. Respond to something meaningful so your response will count. Keep the dialogue going, and do remember that there are only 3 weeks until the quarter is over. For those of you who don't have any posts or responses logged, you need to get busy. There isn't much time left.

Crank by Ellen Hopkins

At an earlier date, I posted a blog about the book Impulse, by this same author. However I did not go in to full detail, but let's not get side tracted. I bought the book Crank on Friday the 21st, and finished it Sunday evening. It was that thrilling, and did I mention only a minimum of 537 pages? It is her[Hopkins] first novel and it is marvelous. The way sh elets the text literally flows to inhance the readers enjoyment of teh book really captivates me[plus how short the pages are!]. On with the sorty shall we? Now, before I talk about the book, let me warn you, this book was not found in the CMS library, I bought it at Barnes&Noble[s?] for $9.99. So if your parents don't approve of you readinga book about a seventeen year old girl with her wacky date with the monster, Crank, then don't say I didn't tell you so. The girls birth name is Kristina, however she turned into a drug thirsty woman, by the name of Bree. Bree gives her confidence, she speaks her mind, [and fliration skills!]. Yet, Bree is not the one that is going to give birth. Bree is not the gifted straight A junior in high school, she is a repercussion of bad parental skills. As the story begins, take note of the visit she has with her biological father in New Mexico. That leads off the story! As Kristina tries to find her true self inside this binge, Bree takes over. Bree gives her comfort, Bree gives her what she dreamed. Bree gives her what she wanted, but not what she needs. Before you know it, you will be at the end of the book! Don't worry people, there is a sequel Glass [which i will also purchase at a date unknown].I highly encourage any one and everyone WITHIN LIMITS to read this book, for the sake of their own good will.

Pearl Harbor hits U.S.

Book_♥; Farewell to Manzanar
Author_
♥; Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston
Pages_
♥; 213

In Mrs. Forsberg's 7th Grade Gifted Language Arts class, our class book was Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, a Japanese-American. It is one of the few intricately detailed personal narratives still left in our world today. (Yes, that means it is a true story). What sparked me about reading this book was how Houston wrote the book without making us feel sorry for her. She said the story in a story-telling way. She began her book when she was age seven, the age that she was sent to a concentration camp after the famous Pearl Harbor bombing. The camp was known as Manzanar. During her years at the camp, she struggles with hardships, danger, and discrimination. Rarely did she ever experience any tremendous happenings that she treasured. Jeanne describes her and her family's adventure during their imprisonment and sometime she talks about what happened before the war. Soon, those memories fade, as she lives her life in Manzanar. Read to understand what a big influence the camp has had on Jeanne's life and how it shaped her future.

I am mainly telling the 8th & 6th graders to read this book, but 7th graders may try reading it again?? ;)

This Book

There is this other book that I'm reading it's about the life of Hitler and why he made the decision to do what he did. I am on page 400 and there are about 900 pages of actual book. So far I think it's kind of interesting. But this book is something you'd check out for research for a book report than to read.

NIGHT

About 120 pages.

I would have to say that it night is one of the best books ever. It really captures your imagination and once you start reading it.... You don't stop. You can always have a mental picture of what is going on the whole time because the author is just so good at telling the story.

So B. It

So I just recently read So B. It by Sarah Weeks, and its only 243 pages. However it is quite an interseting read. The main character Hiedi, or thats who she believes she is, goes on a realld raddicals jourey to uncover her menatlly disabled mothers past. I have to say I had doubts about this book at first, however I realized it got into the conflict pretty quick. Hiedi's mother, who is So B. It [ she has a real name buhht that is unconvered later on in the book] says the word soof when anything good happens. Yet, she also says it when bad things happen. That got to me. As I read more deeper int the book , I couldnt believe the things happening, and then it hit me, the book is fiction. One thing I believe the author could have done better was describe the natural settings around Hiedi on her journey. She travels to New York, from a locatin that i forgot [hehe(;] And the way the author desribes it, it just doesnt fit the strory line at all. She travels between bus station to station, however the reader might get lost.

However, if you want a quick captivating read for the campagn [sp?] you should consider this book. It is not very girlie, and the plot twist was phenomenal. I was very pleased that it did not turn out the way I would have hoped it would, and it is quite odd to think about. Just remember one thing: Just because you may be ill, it doesnt mean you cant accomplish anything!

flipped

i recently went to book-a-holic and traded in a lot of books for extra stpre credit. when i was looking through they're books i found a few that sounded appealing. they are called flipped, sold out, kayla, and hidden child of the holocaust. they also had the boy in the striped pajamas but i thought that was in coleman's library, was that right? but right now i am reading flipped and i is about a girl and a boy. the boy has avoided the girl since second grade, and the girl has tried to get the boy to like her. then when they get to eighth grade, the boy decides he likes the girl and the girl decides to give up on the boy. that is the description on the back, and i have only gotten to the part when the two second graders meet. has anyone read it? if anyone else is interested in reading it, you can borrow it from me in mrs. forsberg's class.
